Our Story

The Scarlet Locomotive runs out of Bellingham, Washington and the Skagit Valley to parts unknown. The band is powered by fiddle, acoustic guitar, mandolin, and the shared vocals of Arielle Luckmann and Ted O’Connell. Call it “Americana” or “Story Music”—this duo thrives on songwriting.

Behind the Engines

Like all musicians, we have a backstory that informs what we do. Both of us have spent time picking bluegrass with The Prozac Mountain Boys. Arielle has a theater background and is now an organic farmer. Ted is a fiction writer. A few years ago while Arielle was off in Chicago teaching at The Old Town School of Folk Music, Ted was in Bellingham and Beijing writing songs. When we both returned to the beautiful Pacific Northwest, it seemed like a good idea to take up our instruments and make something new.

Entering 2018, The Scarlet Locomotive continues to experiment with new work,  building on our repertoire of moody and fun, dark and light, edgy and classic.

Look for us in Portland, Seattle, Missoula, Conway, or Chicago. Better yet, contact the booking agent at your favorite music venue and ask them to give us a listen. Though we live in an age of technology, bands like us still depend on word of mouth to get new music into the taverns and homes of music lovers.

Cheers,

Ted and Arielle
